Whisky as an investment? 🤔
-
Recently read this article on whisky (more frequently, the ones which are part of a collection / rare / soon-to-be-discontinued) as an investment instrument.
(May be slightly off-tangent:
Whisky or Whiskey?
The US follows the Irish example and spells whiskey with an e, while Canada, India and Japan (3 other major whisky producers), also follow the Scottish spelling without an e. Most of the rest of the world seems to have followed suit. Source)
Cliff notes on how Whisk(e)y can be a form of investment
(inspired by @googleging 😃)
- The Rare Whisky Icon 100 Index rose by close to 500% within the last 11 years (index for 100 iconic collectors’ bottles)
- "There is never a guarantee that a bottle of whisky can make you a consistent return of x% in a year"
- "Some bottles could make you 30% returns in a month, some bottles perhaps 20-30% over 2-3 years and some to hold long term over the years before it is the right time to sell."
- Seems like many whisky “investors” are typically both collectors and drinkers themselves so that even if they aren't able to sell their collection, they'd still enjoy consuming it
- Value is also influenced by famous Whisky industry tasters / reviewers e.g. Whisky Fun
Of the popular hard liquors accessible at regular bars or liquor shops, whisky seems to the drink of choice for some.
But to invest in a few bottles is another ball game - they most probably won't be cheap, and commonplace labels would be too widespread to appreciate in value significantly enough.
Or, prices may drop due to dips in popularity or shifting taste trends. (Check out this whisky hall of shame)
Would you invest in Whisky bottles?

Whiskey could be a good investment - especially if you consider yourselves a whiskey connoisseur.
It will be important to track taste trends - whether other spirits and alcoholic beverages are gaining popularity at the expense of whiskey. That would be my key determinant in making an investment decision.

Is it gonna pop soon? lol

‘If you love whisky, set it free,’
was Ian Buxton’s earnest plea in an opinion piece he wrote for Whisky Advocate in late 2011. ‘Mark my words, this “investment” bubble will end badly and people – and whisky – are going to get hurt.’@antoniomc27 https://scotchwhisky.com/magazine/opinion-debate/the-debate/8604/whisky-investment-a-bubble-ready-to-burst/

@arigatomon thanks for sharing!
In the conclusion, the article says " Scotch whisky seems made for the alternative investment club known as SWAG (silver, wine, art and gold). It has the right initials and the crucial rarity factor among the ‘right bottles".
I had never heard about that. But seems almost an heresy to me compare Precious Metals to wine and art... While all 4 items are finite, metals are artificially suppressed not to raise in tandem with paper currencies, while art, wines, cars, antiquities are riding same wave of money printing.

Yeah agreed. Things people (over)do to squeeze nuanced meanings into meaningless pigeonholes aka acronyms which already exist lol.

@arigatomon haha this is mean but funny haha 😂

Anyone into Japanese Suntory Whisky?
-
It won’t be for another 10 years that Japanese whisky will be able to claw its way back onto the global stage to seriously compete with Scotch and American brands on store shelves.
Trust that they're ramping up production. It won't be soon before long.
-
@arigatomon
They discontinued the Hibiki 17 and Hakushu 12. A new series coming up "Ao".
Check your whisky cabinet, those Hibiki is a treasure now. ;)
-
The valuable ones are too far from reach man, unless you're on guestlists, or stay constantly on the loop of news on whisky.
-
@geezfund do u happen to know who’s the buyer?
-
I tried a 25k worth whiskey once (not mine), don't see what the fuss is all about, just tasted like regular scotch
-
Why would people buy whiskey/wine to keep as an investment when they're made to be consumed and appreciated? This is pretty much beyond me.
Out of curiosity, what's the shelf life of whiskey?
-
There is no shelf life for whisky. Many whisky are classified as 'aged whisky' and the number of years its been around is shown. Older it is, the better is some say.
Becareful in whisky investment, make sure they are legit , due your research.
